A Cape Cod family didn’t get what they bargained for when they picked up what they believed was a lost puppy on the side of the road last week.
Once they arrived home, they realized the adorable distressed canine wasn’t domesticated, it was actually a coyote.
The Good Samaritans called up the New England Wildlife Center, who, with the help of the Massachusetts Department of Public of Health, were able to determine that the family wasn’t exposed to rabies. The pup was then placed into rehabilitation by Mass Wildlife, a government organization responsible for the conservation of fish, wildlife, and their habitats in Massachusetts.
The pup won’t be alone for long. A foster sibling from the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island is going to be raised with him once they both receive their vaccinations.
“He is now recovering comfortably in one of our isolation wards, but will not be on his own for long! A foster sibling has just arrived from @riwildliferehab and they will soon be introduced,” said the New England Wildlife Center in a Facebook post. Later adding, “We work hard to give them as much of a natural upbringing as possible, and will work to replicate the essential behaviors and skills they learn from mom and dad.”
The family lucked out because coyotes are known vectors of the rabies virus in Massachusetts.
