Chelmsford man, 71, seriously injured after he was struck by trailer in crosswalk

CHELMSFORD — On Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, at approximately 1:09 p.m., Chelmsford police and fire personnel were dispatched to Groton Road (Route 40) across the street from the Chelmsford Senior Center following a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

According to a statement from Chelmsford Police Chief Colin Spence, when first responders arrived on scene, they determined that a 71-year-old Chelmsford man who was attempting to cross the road in a crosswalk was struck by a landscaping trailer attached to a white Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck traveling inbound on Groton Road.

“The operator of the truck immediately stopped, rendered aid and remained on scene as officers arrived,” Chief Spence said.

The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported by EMS to Lahey Clinic for treatment. He is in serious but stable condition.

The Chelmsford Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is conducting a full investigation of the incident.

“At this time, no charges have been filed, and the operator is cooperating fully with investigators,” Chief Spence said.

Groton Road was temporarily shut down in both directions while police processed the scene. The roadway has since reopened.

“The Chelmsford Police Department reminds all motorists to exercise caution when approaching crosswalks and areas with pedestrian activity,” Chief Spence said. Adding, “No additional information is being released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.”
