NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance as it investigates a series of thefts of historic bronze plaques from cemeteries and public spaces across the city.

On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, police were notified that a bronze plaque had been stolen from a memorial in the Old Hill Burying Ground, located at 25 Greenleaf Street.

According to Newburyport’s Police Marshal Matthew Simons, the missing plaque measured approximately 12 by 24 inches and had been mounted on a granite block. The plaque identified the historic African American section of the cemetery.

Officers canvassed the surrounding area but did not locate any witnesses or surveillance footage capturing the theft or any potential suspects.

The incident is part of a broader investigation into similar thefts reported throughout Newburyport. Police said plaques were also taken from Oak Hill Cemetery sometime before March 15, from Cashman Park prior to January 19, and from Atkinson Common between January 14 and 15.

Marshal Simons also noted a reported plaque theft in a neighboring community and said Newburyport police are coordinating with police in that town.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity in cemeteries or other public areas.

“Newburyport takes great pride in its rich history, and these thefts are deeply concerning to our community,” Marshal Simons said. “We’re asking residents to help us keep a closer eye on our community’s historical markers, and to contact us if they have any information.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newburyport Police Department at (978) 462-4411.
