MARLBOROUGH – A 53-year-old Westborough man was arraigned in Marlborough District Court Friday for brutally murdering his elderly mother in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn on Lakeside Avenue.
Daniel Uhlman, of Westborough, was charged with armed assault to murder a person over 60, as well as other charges, for the death of his mother, Nancy Uhlman, NBCBoston.com reports.
This isn’t the first time Daniel Uhlman was charged with armed assault to murder a person over 60. He spent two and a half years in prison for a prior attempt on his mother’s life back in 2014. (For more on the 2014 incident scroll to the end of the article).
Investigators say that on Thursday morning, Daniel Uhlman called his mother to the hotel – where he had been living since May – and talked to her in her pickup truck in the parking lot. Daniel allegedly told his mother to drive to the back of the hotel, where an altercation took place.
During the attack, Daniel slammed his mother’s head into the pavement about 20 times, stabbed her with a butter knife, and then got into her truck and drove over her twice, killing her. In an interview with police, Daniel said he drove over his mother because she was attempting to crawl or stand. He backed over her to ensure she was dead.
Then, with his hands and arms drenched in blood, Daniel walked into the lobby of the Holiday Inn and told employees that he killed his mother, which prompted them to call 911.
Police found the woman’s body in the back parking lot at around 12:30 p.m. Her blue pickup truck was found in the front parking lot.
When officers at the scene asked Daniel why he killed his mother, he said, “I just felt like killing her.”
In a complaint filed by the Marlborough Police Department, police said that Nancy Uhlman’s body had “signs of significant trauma,” adding that the skin was pulled off her head.
During his arraignment in Marlborough District Court, Daniel Uhlman plead not guilty and was held without bail. He was also required to have a mental health competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.
2014 Stabbing Incident in Westborough
Boston.com reports that in 2014, Uhlman pled guilty in Worcester Superior Court to assault with intent to murder someone over 60 years old and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
for a prior attempt on his mother’s life that took place in her Westborough home on Haskell Street, where they both lived at the time. Investigators say that during the attack, Daniel stabbed his mother in the head and neck with four steak knives, breaking two of them in the process.
Nancy Uhlman, then 72, survived the attack, telling officers after they arrived on scene that her son was responsible.
Daniel Uhlman was arrested after a state employee monitoring a snow storm called 911 to report that he was a man covered in blood walking down East Main Street.
According to the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and was behind bars from Feb. 14, 2014, to May 6, 2015.
