Athol residence severely damaged in chimney blaze, family displaced

ATHOL — Shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the Athol Fire Department responded to the residence located at 21 Park Street following a report of a chimney fire.

According to the Athol Fire Department, upon their arrival, firefighters confirmed the presence of a fire within the chimney. While the blaze was successfully confined to the chimney, it proved to be exceptionally persistent.

The Athol Fire Department received mutual aid from Orange, MA Fire Rescue EMS, Phillipston Fire & EMS, the Westminster Fire Department, Barre Fire Department, and Royalston’s Fire & EMS Association.

Crews remained on scene for just over two hours and cleared the scene at about 11 p.m. The family of four in the home at the time of the fire was allowed to return to the residence.

At 2:00 a.m., the Athol Fire Department was dispatched to the same residence following a report of a fire in the roof of the home.

The home was significantly damaged in the blaze. The family was ultimately displaced from the residence is being assisted by The Salvation Army.
