Maynard Fire Department awarded grant to expand community safety programs

MAYNARD – The Maynard Fire Department has been awarded a $6,900 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services to bolster its community education efforts. Chief Angela Lawless announced the allocation, highlighting its division into $4,700 for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program and $2,200 for the Senior S.A.F.E. program.

Captain Michael Parr and Firefighter Jenn Hureau oversee these initiatives, which include comprehensive fire safety education in Maynard’s public schools from Pre-K through Grade 5. The programs extend to community events such as Maynardfest, Farmer’s Market engagements, and educational sessions with the Maynard Youth Police Academy.

Firefighter Hureau has also collaborated with the Maynard Council on Aging to provide crucial safety programs for seniors, including fall prevention workshops and home safety visits.

The grant empowers Maynard Fire to continue delivering life-saving education, empowering participants to identify fire hazards, evacuate safely, and respond effectively in emergencies.

Chief Lawless emphasized the importance of community engagement, thanking the Department of Fire Services for their support. “This funding will enable us to strengthen our S.A.F.E. programs and ensure the safety and well-being of our residents,” she stated.
