“Sergeant Timothy Van Nostrand located the individual matching that description, later identified as Edwin Canales, in the bus stop near 161 Broadway. Due to the individuals on scene only speaking Spanish, Ofc. Cassandra Campers provided translation,” Officer Bork said.
According to police, Edwin Rafael Canales, 44, is homeless in Somerville.
A male witness at the scene reported to police that he was walking down Broadway towards Cross Street with his nine-year-old daughter and a friend when Canales approached him near 161 Broadway.

The witness said Canales, who was holding a large metal crowbar, brandished it at him while stating that he was going to kill him. The man said that he pulled his daughter away while Canales “continued in a verbal altercation.”
“Canales then fled down Minnesota Avenue, ditching the metal object somewhere before coming back to Broadway,” Officer Canales said. “Units searched the area, but could not come up with that object. The resident at 1 Minnesota Ave. has security cameras showing the incident and Canales fleeing down Minnesota Avenue with a metal object in his hand approximately four feet long.”
According to Officer Canales, two other witnesses on scene saw the incident involving Canales, the man, his daughter and friend, and corroborated his account of what transpired to police.
Canales was arrested for:
- Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
- Threat to Commit Crime
Canales also had two outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest: one warrant from the Somerville Police Department for Larceny from Building, Stealing, and an additional warrant from the Wellesley Police Department for Receive Stolen Property +$1200.
