DRACUT — The Dracut police and fire departments are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a young man who was caught on surveillance footage throwing fireworks into a handicap accessible porta potty at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Arson Watch Reward Program, which offers rewards of up to $5,000.
According to a joint statement issued by Dracut’s Police Chief Peter Bartlett and Fire Chief Richard Patterson, on Sunday, Aug. 18, at around 8:45 p.m., the Dracut Fire Department was called to Veteran’s Memorial Park at 80 Broadway Road following reports of a fire.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found a privately owned, handicapped-accessible porta potty on fire. According to the statement from the Dracut police and fire departments, this was the only handicapped-accessible porta potty in the park. Dracut firefighters acted swiftly and extinguished the blaze.
Dracut police have released a copy of the surveillance video which captured the suspect in action.
The suspect is described as a white male in his teens or early 20s, with brown hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white shirt, dark-colored pants, black and white shoes, and a baseball cap. He and his companions left the scene in a silver Toyota Corolla with New Hampshire license plates.
The Dracut police and fire departments are urging anyone with information about the identity of the individual captured in the surveillance footage to contact Dracut Police at 978-957-2123 or the Arson Watch Reward Hotline at 800-682-9229.
The Arson Watch Reward Program, coordinated by the Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association, offers rewards of up to $5,000 for tips that help solve or prevent arson crimes. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
