FITCHBURG — A Townsend man was arrested today for allegedly shooting two people on Main Street in Fitchburg Sunday night, killing one person and leaving the other in critical condition.
According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., Jarrod Hegarty, 32, of Townsend, is being charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, and possession of a firearm without an FID card.
At approximately 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, Fitchburg police received a report of a shooting in the area of 360 Main Street. When first responders arrived on scene, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was transported to UMass Memorial HealthAlliance’s Leominster Campus where he was pronounced deceased. The other victim was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he is presently in critical, but stable, condition.

During the initial investigation, Hegarty was identified as the suspect, and authorities learned he was still inside a nearby building. Shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, Hegarty exited the building and surrendered to authorities.
Hegarty’s arraignment was today in Fitchburg District Court.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
