CHARLTON — At approximately 1:20 p.m. on May 1, 2025, the Charlton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at Vehicle Outfitters, located at 267 Southbridge Road.
According to a statement from the Charlton Fire Department, workers performing repairs on the roof of Vehicle Outfitters first spotted the fire. They safely exited the roof and evacuated the building before firefighters arrived.
Charlton Fire units C‑1, C‑2 and Engine 1 arrived moments later. While en route, fire personnel assigned to Engine C‑2 confirmed visible flames and requested a second alarm, summoning mutual‑aid companies from Southbridge, Sturbridge, Leicester and Dudley. Leicester also provided an ambulance for firefighter rehabilitation and an additional engine for station coverage, the department added.

A Mobile Ventilation Unit from Sutton was brought in to clear heavy smoke from the building’s first floor, and Rehab 78—a specialized support unit providing hydration, rest, and medical monitoring for firefighters—assisted crews working under taxing conditions.
Thanks to coordinated efforts, the fire was declared under control at 2:10 p.m., and all units cleared by 3:35 p.m.. No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Chief Rob Barton and the Charlton Fire Department extended their gratitude to all mutual‑aid partners, Charlton Police (which provided traffic support and drone photography), Town Administrator Golas and the Building Commissioner for their on‑scene assistance.
