NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Police and Fire Departments responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Saturday, June 7, that left two people injured and required specialized rescue equipment to extricate one of the drivers.
According to a joint statement from City Marshal Matthew Simons and Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury III, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 4:03 p.m. to the intersection of Route 1 and Pond Street, where they found three vehicles involved: a 2022 Tesla Model 3, a Toyota 4Runner, and a Toyota Corolla.
Firefighters used the jaws of life to safely extricate the Tesla driver, who was trapped due to extensive driver-side damage. Responders also deployed an electric vehicle emergency plug to prevent the Tesla from accidentally starting or moving during the rescue. Additionally, crews consulted an electric vehicle app for Tesla-specific safety information “which guided their strategy in executing rescue operations.”

Atlantic Ambulance transported two individuals to local hospitals with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Amesbury Fire Department remained on standby to assist with vehicle transport.
Police and fire crews cleared the scene within two hours.
“This was an excellent response from all involved,” said Chief Bradbury. “The quick work of our crews in efficiently utilizing rescue tools ensured that all involved in the crash received the highest quality of care. As always, I commend the strong teamwork between the Police and Fire Departments, and thank our mutual aid partners for being ready to support us at any moment.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Newburyport Police Department.
