WORCESTER — According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to his office are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting that took place today in the City of Worcester.
According to a statement from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, on the morning of August 22, 2025, members of the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), the United States Marshals Service, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office executed an arrest warrant related to a Superior Court case in the vicinity of Strathmore Road in Worcester.
The subject of the warrant, 23-year-old Chris Betances of Worcester, attempted to flee the scene by driving a vehicle toward the officers. In response to the perceived threat, a deputy U.S. Marshal discharged his firearm, striking and wounding Betances. Officers on scene immediately rendered medical aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Betances is reportedly in stable condition at this time.
Betances was arraigned today in Worcester Superior Court on the outstanding warrant and ordered held without bail. He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on August 29, 2025.
The incident remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the State Police Crime Scene Services and Firearms Identification Sections, the Cyber Crimes Unit, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), Troopers from the Uniform Division of Troop C, the United States Marshals Service, and the Worcester Police Department.
