FITCHBURG — At 12:51 p.m. today, Fitchburg Fire Department Group 4 companies were dispatched to South Street after a caller reported a fire in the area.
According to a statement from the Fitchburg Fire Department, while en route, crews were notified by dispatch that a resident had reported smoke coming from the basement of the multi-unit apartment building located at 130 South Street.

“On arrival, crews confirmed a fire in the basement of the residence and quickly stretched an attack line [hose] and established a water supply,” the Fitchburg Fire Department said in its statement. “The fire was contained to the basement and successfully extinguished before overhaul operations were conducted.”

No injuries were reported.
According to the department, 11 residents were displaced as a result of the incident.
“We thank our neighboring communities who responded mutual aid to cover our city,” the Fitchburg Fire Department said in its statement.
