UXBRIDGE — An Uxbridge police officer was killed early this morning after he was struck by a tractor-trailer while assisting a motorist on Route 146 Northbound near mile marker 5.9.
According to a statement from Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early’s Office, the preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:40 a.m., on Jan. 7, 2026, Officer Stephen LaPorta was outside his cruiser assisting a motorist when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer involved was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The motorist Officer LaPorta was assisting was not physically injured.
“Officer LaPorta had been with the Uxbridge Police Department for approximately two
years and leaves behind a wife and one child,” Early said in the statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and ask the media to respect their privacy at this time.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
The following agencies are involved in the investigation: the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Uxbridge Police Department, Uxbridge Fire Department, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, MassDOT, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS), Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES), and Crime Scene Services Section.
