OAKHAM — On Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, at approximately 12:45 a.m., firefighters with the Oakham Fire Department were dispatched to the residence located at 67 Skyline Drive following a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a structure fire.
According to a joint statement from Oakham Fire Chief Timothy Howe, Oakham Police Chief Frederick Gehring, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., when firefighters arrived on scene, they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence and learned that a Rutland police officer had already attempted to enter the home, but was forced back outside because of the conditions inside.

“Firefighters immediately began to attack the fire in about six inches of snow amid temperatures of about 4°F, which froze hose lines and caused dangerously icy conditions at the scene,” the statement said. “They struck multiple alarms to bring additional resources, including numerous tankers carrying water, and battled the flames for about an hour before bringing them under control. Firefighters remained at the home through the morning extinguishing hot spots and conducting overhaul.”
One adult — the home’s sole resident — was found deceased inside the residence. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The fire’s origin and cause remain under investigation by the Oakham Fire Department, Oakham Police, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office. Officials said the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit and Special Operations team also responded, deploying a drone unit to capture aerial and interior imagery.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Rutland, Spencer, New Braintree, Athol, Brookfield, East Brookfield, North Brookfield, Paxton, Hardwick, Hubbardston, Orange, and Warren, according to officials.
