Marlborough man charged with shoplifting after fleeing Shrewsbury Market Basket

SHREWSBURY — A Marlborough man is facing a second-offense shoplifting charge after police say he took multiple food items and razor sets from a Market Basket in Shrewsbury and fled the scene when confronted by store employees.

According to a Statement of Facts filed in Westborough District Court written by Shrewsbury Police Officer Ashley Ljunggren, on Dec. 12, 2025, at approximately 11:29 a.m., Richard Kenny, 42, of Marlborough, entered the Market Basket at 200 Hartford Turnpike and took multiple pre-made food items and two razor sets.

“Kenny bypassed all points of sale and walked out of the store without attempting to pay for those items that were displayed for sale,” Officer Ljunggren said.

According to Officer Ljunggren, two store managers and an employee intercepted Kenny outside the store and escorted him back inside to pay. Kenny then refused to pay and ran out of the store.

“Kenny was located approximately a quarter mile from the store on Hartford Turnpike,” Officer Ljunggren said.

Richard Kenny, 42, of Marlborough, was charged with the following:

  • Shoplifting by Asportation, 2nd offense

According to police, Kenny was found guilty of the same charge on June 23, 2010 (the jurisdiction the charge originated from was not included in Officer Ljunggren’s report).

Kenny was arraigned in Westborough District Court on Dec. 12, 2025. Following his arraignment, he was released on $300 cash bail. His next court appearance was a pretrial hearing which he attended on Jan. 6, 2026. After the pretrial hearing, Kenny had a compliance and election hearing scheduled for Feb. 6, 2026.

Disclaimer: If you are wondering why the arrest in this story took place in December, that’s because I had to file FOIA request(s) to obtain the court documents. FOIAs are time-consuming.
