
BELMONT — On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at approximately 11:28 a.m., police responded to Belmont High School after receiving a call from an individual who reported hearing a gunshot inside the school.
According to the Belmont Police Department, no additional calls were received reporting similar concerns.
Belmont police officers responded immediately to the Belmont Middle and High School and coordinated with school officials. Out of an abundance of caution, administrators initiated a shelter-in-place at approximately 11:35 a.m. to allow police to thoroughly check the building.
In a statement, the Belmont Police Department said that at no point was there any evidence that a gunshot had occurred inside the school.
Police cleared the building by 11:58 a.m., and the shelter-in-place was lifted. Police remained on site throughout the day.
Belmont police said the incident appears to have been a “swatting call” and that the Commonwealth Fusion Center, a state-run intelligence hub that shares threat-related information among agencies, was notified.
The Belmont Police Department, along with the Massachusetts State Police, are actively investigating the incident.
