Houthis enter Iran war as U.S. troops are wounded in Saudi base strike

Israel Defense Forces said a missile launched from Yemen toward Israel was intercepted early Saturday by Israeli air defenses.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels later claimed responsibility for the attack, which was reportedly their first missile strike on Israel since the war began.

PBS reported that a Houthi military spokesman announced on the group’s satellite television channel that the rebels had fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at what he described as “sensitive Israeli military sites” in southern Israel.

The attacks come as at least 12 U.S. service members were wounded in an Iranian strike on a military base in Saudi Arabia Friday.

According to the Associated Press, Friday’s attack on the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia involved at least six ballistic missiles and 29 drones, left five U.S. troops in serious condition, and struck a building where soldiers were inside at the time.

The air base, which is about 60 miles away from Saudi Arabia’s capital, is run by the Royal Saudi Air Force and also used by the American military.

Iranian officials announced Saturday that one refueling aircraft was destroyed in the attack on the air base, three others were damaged, and the airbase had already been hit earlier in the week.

Satellite images aired by Iran’s Press TV appeared to show damage to several aircraft at the airbase following the Iranian attacks. NPR reported that the images released by Iran were Chinese satellite photos.

Since the war began on February 28, Iran has repeatedly targeted U.S. forces at bases in the Middle East, and the Pentagon says at least 13 service members have been killed.
