Three-alarm fire tears through Southbridge building, causes $400,000 in damage

SOUTHBRIDGE — On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at approximately 12:08 a.m., firefighters with the Southbridge Fire Department responded to a three-alarm structure fire at 46 Worcester Street.

According to Southbridge Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Hulyk, when firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy fire coming from the rear, enclosed porches on the second floor of 46 Worcester Street.

Ten occupants evacuated on their own or with assistance from police.

“Multiple handlines were advanced to attack the fire,” Deputy Chief Hulyk said in a statement. “A second and third alarm were struck for additional resources.”

There were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Southbridge Fire Department and the Fire Investigation Unit of the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Damage is estimated at $400,000, according to Deputy Chief Hulyk.
