WASHINGTON — At a White House Cabinet meeting on May 27, 2026, President Donald Trump said Iran “very much” wants to make a deal — but said the United States is not satisfied with the current state of negotiations.
Trump said Iran’s navy and air force are gone, adding that Iran’s economy is in “free fall,” they have 250% inflation and their money “has no value.”
“Their whole economic system is broken down,” Trump said. “They thought they were going to outweigh me. You know, we’ll outweigh him. We’ve got the midterms. I don’t care about the midterms. Look what happened last night.”
Trump said Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying he was pursuing that goal “for the world,” not just for the United States.
Later in the meeting, a reporter asked Trump if he would accept an agreement with Iran that just calls for further talks on uranium. Trump initially said no, before adding that parts of the deal could move quickly through a memorandum of understanding — including reopening the Strait of Hormuz immediately — but said the agreement would have to be “perfect.”
“I didn’t do this to get a crummy agreement,” Trump said. “The worst agreement ever signed was by Barack Hussein Obama. What a horrible agreement that was.”
Trump also suggested a broader regional deal could involve Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and other countries joining the Abraham Accords, adding that he wasn’t sure the United States should make a deal if they don’t agree to join.
