Construction crew strikes gas main in Longmeadow, prompting evacuations

LONGMEADOW — On Monday, July 13, 2026, at approximately 8:37 a.m., the Longmeadow Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 53 Severn Street following a report of a gas leak.

According to Longmeadow Fire Chief John Rigney, fire crews arrived on scene at approximately 8:43 a.m. and located a gas leak in the street caused by excavation work.

A construction crew installing new utilities in the area struck a 2-inch gas main, causing the main to vent gas into the area, Chief Rigney said.

Fire crews evacuated five residents from the area and maintained a safety perimeter while waiting for Eversource to respond.

Eversource arrived on scene at approximately 9:09 a.m., and the flow of gas was shut down about 15 minutes later.

Chief Rigney said in a statement issued at 10:51 a.m. that the scene was safe to enter and all evacuated residents could return to their homes.

“Eversource Gas will be remaining on scene to repair the gas main and restore gas service to the 11 households that were affected,” Chief Rigney said.

Chief Rigney said residents in the immediate neighborhood may continue to smell gas until it dissipates.
