ATHOL — A 75-year-old woman from Baldwinville died after she was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk outside Market Basket in Athol Monday afternoon.
According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, on Aug. 17, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the area of 147 Tower Road following a report of a crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian.
When first responders arrived on scene, they located Irene Murray, 75, of Baldwinville, suffering from serious injuries.
Murray was transported by LifeFlight to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where she was pronounced dead on Tuesday.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the crash occurred in a crosswalk outside the grocery store, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office reported on Aug. 19, 2026. The driver of the involved vehicle, a 49-year-old woman, remained at the scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine Murray’s cause and manner of death.
The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Athol Police Department.
