LEOMINSTER — Deputy Fire Chief Scott Cordio of the Leominster Fire Department said smoke from a brush fire that overtook a mile along Route 2 West was visible from Whitney Field Mall.
“Oh yeah, they had a great smoke column going up there,” said Cordio.
Reports of the brush fire came into the Leominster Fire Department around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
The fire, which Cordio said took a couple hours to put out, scorched a strip of land about a mile long between mile markers 99 and 100 on Route 2 West in Leominster. The mile markers are between Exit 99b (Route 12) and Exit 100 (Route 13).
State Troopers had to shut down one of two travel lanes on Route 2 as firefighters worked to put the fire out, causing traffic delays.
The brush fire began to encroach on homes near Colbert Street, but firefighters quelled the blaze without having to evacuate any residents.
No one was injured in the fire.
Cordio said the cause of the fire is unknown.
The Leominster Fire Department received mutual aid from Fitchburg, Ayer, Lunenburg, and Shirley’s fire departments.
