ASHBURNHAM – Police are asking residents to remain vigilant after a suspicious man has been spotted several times in the neighborhood surrounding Winchendon Road and High Street.

According to The Gardner News, the man was first observed on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at about 12:15 a.m., when a resident of Winchendon Road reported an individual behind her home with a flashlight.

After a couple hours searching, police were unable to locate the man.

“This (incident) prompted neighbors to check their surveillance cameras the next day,” Ashburnham Police Chief Chris Conrad told The Gardner News. “They discovered that an unidentified male had been walking around their properties for several hours on Tuesday afternoon. But he was not seen by anybody at the time.”

According to Ashburnham Police, on Saturday, Nov. 26, at about 1:15 p.m., the man was seen again, this time by a group of children who observed him walking in the wood line behind their homes on Winchendon Road and High Street.

“When the male party approached the children, they ran into their home to alert their parents and the party was seen leaving the area quickly through the wooded area,” said Ashburnham Police in a Facebook post. Later adding, “The male party is not known to the children or families and was described by the children as a male party in his 20s, tall, thin build, wearing a black/dark sweatshirt and black/dark sweatpants.”

With the help of the Gardner Police Department’s K9 unit, Ashburnham police responded to the scene and tracked the man’s exit through the woods to the area around High Street and Lashua Road, then back to the Winchendon Road area, where police believe the man either entered a residence or was picked up by a vehicle.

Police are asking anyone who may have observed similar behavior recently to contact dispatch immediately at (978) 827-4413.
