“While responding to the call, dispatch notified units that a possible assault was occurring,” Officer Moreira said.
When he arrived on scene, Officer Moreira saw an individual in a gray shirt – later identified as Joao Alfredo Hobmeir Junior – striking a man in the head with his blue-colored shoe.
Hobmeir Junior, 36, is a resident of 19 Rhode Island Avenue in Somerville.
The victim – whose name was not released – was seated on a city bench, had a laceration above his right eye, and was not fighting back.
“I yelled ‘Police stop,’ but he continued, and I had to pull his shirt and physically remove him from the victim,” Officer Moreira explained.
Officer Moreira said Hobmeir Junior was intoxicated and unwilling to cooperate with police.
“Mr. Hobmeir Junior continued to yell and engage with [the man on the bench],” Officer Moreira said. “At this point, Mr. Hobmeir Junior was placed in handcuffs and notified he was under arrest.”
Hobmeir Junior was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and transported to the Somerville Police Department for booking.
The victim was transported to Cambridge Hospital for medical treatment.
