WORCESTER – Clinical Psychologist Dr. Richard Hummel, MD, was recognized for his four-decade-long commitment to the mental well-being of Worcester’s youth. In a heartfelt ceremony on October 4th at the Community Healthlink (CHL) offices, Mayor Joe Petty presented Dr. Hummel with a key to the City of Worcester.
Beginning his illustrious journey at the Worcester Youth Guidance Center (WYG) in 1983, which eventually merged with CHL, Dr. Hummel has remained unwavering in his dedication to the community.
Gordon Benson, CHL’s interim president, lauded Dr. Hummel’s contributions, saying, “He embodies the spirit of a humanitarian. From art and music therapy to group tutoring, Dr. Hummel has consistently poured his passion into community-based programs.” Furthermore, he highlighted Dr. Hummel’s influential role in the psychology training program at CHL, underlining how his leadership has positively transformed countless lives.

Dr. Hummel’s most recent endeavors include significant roles at the Juvenile Court Clinic (JCC) and the Together for Kids (TFK) program. Here, he has made a difference by guiding some of the city’s most vulnerable children towards brighter futures. As a forensic psychologist, Dr. Hummel evaluates risk in youth who exhibit dangerous behaviors and offers recommendations to ensure they become constructive community members. Simultaneously, under his guidance, the TFK program strives to eradicate preschool expulsion by offering classroom consultations and interventions.
Additionally, in his private practice, Dr. Hummel extends his expertise by offering consultations, assessments, and staff training for various state departments, ensuring the overall betterment of the community.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Hummel’s contributions continue to resonate within Worcester. An avid soccer enthusiast, he engages in pick-up games with immigrant groups, fostering unity and camaraderie. As a musician, he volunteers his talent playing the trumpet and drums at church services. Alongside his wife, Betsy, Dr. Hummel remains an active contributor to the Worcester Alliance for Refugee Ministry (WARM), leading music-based initiatives that support and uplift the refugee community.
This commendation celebrates not just Dr. Hummel’s professional achievements but also his holistic approach to community welfare, marking him as a true pillar of the Worcester community.
