NEWTON — The individual who lost his life in a house fire on Lincoln Road late last month has been identified as 83-year-old Pompeo “Paul” DeRubeis Sr.
According to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, DeRubeis was trapped in his home after the fire broke out at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 24, 2024.
DeRubeis, along with another individual, were taken to Mass General Hospital, where DeRubeis succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The identity of the other victim, who sustained severe burns, has not been disclosed. Fire officials investigating the blaze say the fire was accidental, suggesting a “heating appliance” as the probable cause.
Born in San Donato Val di Comino, Italy, DeRubeis relocated to Newton at the age of 23. He then lived in Newton for 60 years. His obituary highlights his passion for soccer and notes his long-standing affiliation with the Newton Soccer Club.
