Major Sewage Spill in Worcester Affects Lake Quinsigamond, Prompting Health Warnings

WORCESTER — Approximately 193,300 gallons of sewage spilled in the vicinity of 65 Lake Ave at approximately 6 p.m. on Feb. 20, 2024.

According to a press release from the City of Worcester, the spill of untreated waste water resulted from a sanitary sewer overflow.

Some of the sewage made its way into the city’s storm sewer center system, which ultimately drains into Lake Quinsigamond.

City teams promptly addressed the situation by closing the affected pipe and managing the leak. The sewer system continues to function as usual via an alternate backup pipe.

Following the spill, residents were advised to the area at Lake Quinsigamond with caution because of the possibility of elevated E. Coli levels.

“Testing will be done daily and individuals are advised to use the area at Lake Quinsigamond with caution until tested levels that support recreational use are attained,” the city’s Feb. 21 release said. “The public is also advised that ice fishing on the lake is restricted until levels return to normal.”
