STOW — On Friday, March 22, at 2:18 p.m., Stow police and fire personnel received a call reporting that a Concord resident walked into the lobby of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services office and reported that he found a WWII-era unexploded hand grenade and it was in the trunk of their vehicle.
According to a press release from Stow’s Fire Chief John Paul Benoit, first responders and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad swiftly arrived at the scene to secure a safe perimeter for the examination of the grenade.
Upon detailed inspection, the grenade, identified as a World War II-era Mk. 2 “Pineapple” fragmentation grenade, was found to be inert, and most likely a sample used in training exercises. Consequently, it was determined that there was no threat to safety.
“I would like to remind all residents to call 911 immediately if you find something suspicious or that resembles any kind of military ordinance,” Chief Benoit said. “Do not attempt to move or handle any potential explosive. Leave the area and let first responders handle the situation professionally.”
