BOLTON — A truck driver, who suffered serious injuries from a hammer attack by two men in a road rage incident on I-495 in Bolton Monday, is currently recuperating at UMass Memorial HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster.
According to the preliminary investigation by Troopers from the State Police-Leominster Barracks, two men in a Volkswagen GTI hatchback attacked the driver of a tractor-trailer during a road rage incident that took place in the breakdown lane of I-495 in Bolton on Monday at about 1:58 p.m.
During the assault, the operator of the tractor trailer was struck with a hammer. The driver, a 28-year-old man from Maine, incurred serious injuries that were not life-threatening. He was taken to UMass Memorial HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster for treatment, where he is currently recuperating.
The suspects, later identified as 23-year-old Javier Gutierrez Vargas and 28-year-old Juan Marin from Dracut, left the scene in their Volkswagen before police arrived. NBC10Boston reports that a woman accompanying the men in the vehicle was not taken into custody.
Shortly after State Police issued a BOLO (Be On the LookOut) alert for the vehicle and suspects, the suspects were observed in Marlborough. Marlborough police stopped the vehicle and detained the men, who were taken into custody by the Troopers from the State Police-Leominster Barracks.
Marin and Vargas were both charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of disorderly conduct.
According to police, both men posted bail overnight and were released. They are slated for arraignment at Clinton District Court on Tuesday.
