Shirley – Gallery Sitka, a woman-owned and operated art gallery with a keen focus on abstract art, announces the exhibition “Symptoms” by French visual artist Veronique Sapin. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, April 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the gallery located at 2 Shaker Rd., D101. The opening is free and offers the public a chance to meet Sapin, whose works will be on display through May 3.
Veronique Sapin, who resides and works in Cugnaux, France, describes her unique approach to ink painting: “Working with ink means anticipating what the ink will want to do, expecting it not to do so, and measuring our degree of intervention on its freedom. This implies a constant game of partnership and adversity between the artist and the medium.” This technique, which Sapin developed during her time in Singapore under the tutelage of artist Lim Choon Jin, will be a highlight of the “Symptoms” exhibition.

Sapin’s artistry spans videos, installations, photos, ink paintings, and art books, earning her spots in over 240 exhibitions across forty countries. She also leads FemLink-Art, an international collective of women artists from more than 60 countries.
Additionally, an Artist Talk titled “Sisterhood in Art, as a Consequence, as a Strategy” will be hosted by Sapin at the Fitchburg Art Museum on Thursday, May 2, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., also free to the public.
Tamar Russell Brown, the owner of Gallery Sitka, is excited to introduce more international artists to the gallery’s offerings. “Veronique is our first French female artist to join our Gallery Sitka family; we invite the community to join us in welcoming her!”
Gallery Sitka, established in 2014, represents more than twenty artists from New England, New York, Brazil, France, and Italy, with additional locations in Newport, RI; Saratoga, NY; and periodic pop-up events across the Northeast.
