Shirley police charge tractor-trailer driver who left scene after crashing into utility pole

SHIRLEY — A tractor-trailer driver is facing charges after allegedly striking a utility pole on Whitney Road today and fleeing the scene.

According to a statement from the Shirley Police Department posted to social media at around 8:45 p.m. today, earlier in the day, police were dispatched to the area of Whitney Road after receiving reports that a vehicle had struck a utility pole and taken down wires. When officers arrived on scene, the vehicle had already left.

Police said that through a brief investigation and a review of footage captured by residential surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, they were able to identify both the tractor-trailer and its operator. The driver will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage.

Shirley police used the incident to remind the public that drivers involved in crashes that cause injury or property damage are legally required to stop immediately, identify themselves, exchange information, or contact the police. Failing to do so may result in criminal charges.

Shirley police did not release the name of the driver.
