ATHOL — At 8:04 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2024, the Athol Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at the Historic Athol Railroad Station, located behind Ron’s Fuel, Inc., on South Athol Road.
Upon arrival, fire crews found a pile of railroad ties ablaze. According to the Athol Fire Department, to combat the fire effectively, command called for Engine 1 to secure a water supply from a hydrant across the street. In addition, the Department of Public Works was requested to provide a backhoe to separate the burning ties, allowing firefighters better access to the core of the fire.
The incident required immediate coordination with the railroad authorities, who were asked to suspend all train operations until the fire was completely extinguished and the area was deemed safe.
