Fuel spill from box truck on Route 2 in Acton results in multi-agency cleanup

ACTON — At approximately 12:38 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the Acton Fire Department was called to the area of Main Street and the Route 2 southbound offramp following a report of a fuel spill from a truck.

Responding crews found that a box truck traveling eastbound on Route 2 had struck tire debris, which severed a line to one of the truck’s saddle fuel tanks, and resulted in a diesel fuel leak.

According to Acton’s Fire Chief Anita Arnum, the driver quickly noticed the issue, pulled off the highway, and stopped. It is estimated that about 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto Route 2 and Main Street.

The Acton Fire Department responded with two command vehicles, two engines, and a hazardous materials trailer equipped with supplies to mitigate the spill.

First responders contained the leak at the truck’s tank and spread absorbent clay granules to soak up the spilled diesel fuel.

In addition to the Acton Fire Department, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), and Acton’s highway department also responded to the scene. MassDOT was notified to sand approximately two miles of Route 2 eastbound to help absorb the spilled diesel fuel. The Acton Highway Department responded with a sander to assist with removing the absorbed diesel fuel.

Acton Police assisted with traffic control and assessed the extent of the spill on Route 2.
