SOMERVILLE — On Monday, May 27, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Detectives Mark Pulli, Joseph Moreira, and Officer Kevin Henriquez of the Somerville Police Department were dispatched to Gilman Street following a report of shots fired.
When police arrived on scene, a witness told Det. Pulli that he saw an altercation between two men outside his building on Jasper Street. During the fight, one of the men – later identified as Juan Ramos-Gomez – fired a black semi-automatic hand gun at the other individual.

According to police, Juan Jose Ramos-Gomez, 44, is a resident of 59 Pearl Street, Apt. 1, in Somerville.
Detective Pulli stated that a bullet appeared to have ricocheted off the pavement and then went through a bedroom window of the witness’ apartment.
The witness told Det. Pulli that he videotaped the entire incident with his smart phone and shared the video with the officer.
The witness added that he recognized the man Ramos-Gomez shot at as a neighbor of his who lives in apartment #2, but he did not know the individual’s name.
“A crime scene was established, a damaged shell casing recovered on Jasper Street appeared to be a 380-caliber casing,” Det. Pulli said. “The casing was photographed and collected as evidence. I observed and photographed the bullet hole in the window and then went into the residence to look for the slug which was located on the floor of the bedroom. It was photographed and collected as evidence.”
Det. Pulli reviewed the video provided by the witness. It was taken at 11:46 a.m. from behind an air conditioner mounted in a window of his apartment.
“In reviewing the video, I observed a heavyset male, later identified as Juan Ramos-Gomez, wearing a navy blue hat, navy blue three button collared shirt, black high-top sneakers, and blue jeans holding a black semi-automatic handgun in his right hand,” Det. Pulli said. “He was arguing with two Hispanic males, both wearing black.”
One of the males Ramos-Gomez was arguing with was tall, thin, had black curly hair and was wearing a black jacket and black pants. The other individual was short and thin with a black hat, black t-shirt, and black jeans on.
Police later identified the taller male, but his name was redacted from Det. Pulli’s report.
In the video, Det. Pulli said the taller male and Ramos-Gomez “went back and forth arguing” with one another until Ramos-Gomez fired a round toward the man’s feet, which struck the cement.
“He then racked another round which ejected onto the street,” Det. Pulli explained. “He picked it up and then entered a white sedan and drove in the direction of Pearl Street.”
Det. Pulli went to apartment #2 to speak with the victim [i.e. the taller male]. He wasn’t there, but the detective spoke with his female roommate who gave him her roommate’s name and provided his wife’s phone number.
Det. Pulli then called the victim’s wife.
“She stated that her husband [name redacted] was in some type of dispute today with a man known to her as ‘[name/alias redacted],'” Det. Pulli said. The alias of the individual was later found to be one utilized by Ramos-Gomez. “She stated that [her husband] took off from the apartment right after, and she was worried about him. She stated ‘[name/alias redacted]’ lived at 59 Pearl Street in the basement. [The man’s wife] also provided the phone number for [her husband]. I called him multiple times but the phone was off.”
Earlier in the day, around 12:00 p.m., patrol units were dispatched to Ramos-Gomez’s apartment at 59 Pearl Street after an anonymous caller reported an altercation and hearing gunshots in the area.
Police searched the area with no results.
“It was subsequently learned that the caller in that incident’s phone number was registered to 97 Gilman Street,” Det. Pulli said. (Gilman Street was where police were dispatched following the incident report at 2:00 p.m.)
Based on this information, police went back to 59 Pearl Street to speak with Ramos-Gomez, who lived in the basement.
“Upon arrival we observed a white 2014 Honda Civic registered to Juan Ramos-Gomez in the driveway,” Det. Pulli said. “It had heavy damage to the front windshield, rear windshield, and both the passenger and rear right passenger windows. I observed the vehicle to have a sun roof and the same tire rims as the vehicle involved in the shooting incident [in the video]. We knocked on the basement apartment door several times. I then knocked on an open window to the apartment at which time a heavy-set male wearing the same navy-blue hat, navy blue three button collared shirt, black high-top sneakers from the video came to the window. I introduced myself and asked him to come to the door. Immediately upon the male party opening the door, he was recognized as the same male from the video provided.”
At this point, Officer Henriquez acted as an interpreter because Ramos-Gomez only speaks Spanish.
Detective Pulli stated that Officer Henriquez informed Ramos-Gomez why the police were at his apartment and read him his Miranda rights in Spanish, which Ramos-Gomez confirmed he fully understood.
Ramos-Gomez then confirmed his identity to police and admitted that he was in an altercation on Jasper Street, Det. Pulli said.
“He stated the gun was in a drawer in the kitchen of his apartment,” Det. Pulli said. “A search of the CJIS [the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) database] system showed no valid LTC [license to carry] listed for Ramos-Gomez. We then secured the apartment pending a search warrant to recover the firearm, and I placed Ramos-Gomez under arrest.”
Ramos-Gomez was charged with:
- Discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building
- Assault with a dangerous weapon (to wit a firearm)
- Carrying a firearm without a license
- Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
“Unit 200 transported him to Somerville Police Headquarters, where he was booked according to department policies,” Det. Pulli said. “At the station, I submitted the recovered projectile and shell casing into evidence along with Ramos-Gomez’s clothing, which were seized to be tested for gunshot residue.”
