Worcester officials urge caution after three homemade explosive devices found in coolers

WORCESTER — City officials are asking for the public’s vigilance after several homemade explosive devices – placed inside coolers – were found throughout the city.

According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, a small explosion occurred in the area of 185 Madison Street. Investigators found fireworks, a butane gas can, and materials for projectiles at the scene.

Two additional undetonated devices, made from similar materials and placed inside coolers, were discovered in Worcester last month. The public is urged to call 911 if they spot any suspicious items.

The Massachusetts State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, the Worcester Police Department, the Worcester Fire Department, and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are actively investigating the explosive devices.

“As authorities continue to investigate, they encourage the public to be mindful of unattended items, particularly coolers,” Early’s office said in a statement. “Do not attempt to tamper with these items. Instead, call the authorities immediately.”
