ATHOL — A 22-year-old man from Athol is being held in jail until the end of August for threatening to kill and assaulting a young man from Hubbardston with a handgun after procuring alcohol for him.
According to police, on Thursday, May 2, 2024, Keith A. Shaw, 22, of 127 Burma Road in Athol, was arrested on Jones Street for providing alcohol to a Hubbardston man, a recent Quabbin Regional High School graduate under the legal drinking age of 21, and for assaulting and threatening to kill him with a handgun. Shaw was accompanied by a juvenile who was also arrested.
The Hubbardston man’s Facebook cover photo shows him shirtless, wearing a cowboy hat, with his head tilted downward to obscure his face.
According to the criminal complaint submitted by Athol police to the Orange District Court, Shaw assaulted the Hubbardston man with the handgun with the “intent to murder such person.”
Shaw was charged with:
- Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (firearm)
- Assault to Murder, Firearm-Armed
- Possessing a Firearm without an FID Card
- Threat to Commit a Crime (to wit: murder)
- Sell/Deliver Liquor to Person Under 21
- Possess Firearm in Felony
- Firearm, Intoxicated Licensee Carry
The personnel narrative(s), statement of facts, and other documents that support statements of probable cause for Shaw’s arrest were suppressed by the Commonwealth because Shaw’s co-defendant (i.e., accomplice) is a juvenile.

Shaw was arraigned in Orange District Court on Friday, May 3, 2024.
After a dangerousness hearing was held during Shaw’s arraignment, Judge Laurie MacLeod approved the Commonwealth’s motion for an order of pretrial detention. Judge MacLeod approved a restraining order issued by the Commonwealth on behalf of the Hubbardston man as well.
Judge MacLeod ordered Shaw be held in jail up to 120 days, or until August 30, 2024.
Disclaimer: If you are wondering why the incident in this story was from May, that’s because I had to file FOIA request(s) to get the court documents for the incident. FOIAs are time consuming.
