Fitchburg firefighters respond to blaze under Rollstone Street bridge caused by exploding propane tanks

FITCHBURG โ€” On August 24, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., Fitchburg firefighters responded to a report of thick black smoke coming from under a bridge on Rollstone Street.

Upon arrival, the Engine 4 crew confirmed a fire beneath the bridge and stretched an attack line to tackle the blaze.

Further investigation revealed exposed arching electrical wires and exploding propane tanks under the bridge, the Fitchburg Fire Department said in a statement on Facebook. The situation prompted the request for additional firefighting units to provide extra manpower and equipment.

Crews initially contained the fire using dry chemical extinguishers until the power could be safely shut off. Once the power was disconnected, fire crews fully extinguished the fire using the attack line.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
