Shrewsbury woman arrested after alleged assault on elderly, visually impaired roommate; no-contact order later lifted

SHREWSBURY โ€” On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Shrewsbury police arrested 32-year-old Stephanie Oโ€™Brien after she allegedly assaulted a 76-year-old individual with whom she shares an apartment at 12 Maple Avenue.

According to a Statement of Facts in Support of Application for Criminal Complaint submitted to the Westborough District Court on behalf of the Shrewsbury Police Department, O’Brien struck the elderly victim multiple times on the arm and leg during a dispute. The victim โ€“ who is nearly blind, requires a walker for mobility, and is known to the Commonwealth โ€“ had to leave the residence and walk down the street to a gas station to call 911 because Oโ€™Brien broke all the phones in their apartment.

Shrewsbury police later arrived and took O’Brien into custody. She was charged with assault and battery on a person 60+/disabled, witness intimidation, and assault and battery. Her bail was set at $200, and she was arraigned the next day in Westborough District Court. Oโ€™Brien was released on bail under the condition that she stay away from, refrain from contacting, and not abuse the victim.

On Aug. 14, 2024, the victim filed a motion to vacate the stay away/no contact order against Oโ€™Brien, which Judge James Haddad allowed. In Massachusetts, such a motion is a legal request to remove the restrictions preventing the defendant from contacting the protected individual.
