SHREWSBURY — On Thursday, April 23, 2026, at approximately 1:57 p.m., Shrewsbury police were dispatched to 727 Hartford Turnpike (Route 20) after a 911 caller reported a motor vehicle crash in the area.
According to the Shrewsbury Police Department, Shrewsbury police officers, firefighters and Worcester EMS personnel responded to the scene.
When first responders arrived on scene, they were met with the aftermath of a crash involving a Hyundai Elantra and a Mercedes SUV.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced deceased. The driver of the Mercedes was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Hartford Turnpike was closed for several hours between South Street and Centech Boulevard because of the crash, and traffic was diverted.
Officer Timothy Charland and several other members of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team, who responded to the scene, are investigating the crash, according to the Shrewsbury Police Department.
Police said the identity of the victim and additional details are not being released at the present time because the investigation is ongoing.
“The Shrewsbury Police Department extends our condolences to the victim and their family after this tragic incident,” the department said in a statement.
