Webster man faces 16 charges after fleeing Shrewsbury traffic stop, striking vehicle, injuring driver, and possessing unlicensed large capacity firearm

SHREWSBURY โ€” Shrewsbury police reported that on Thursday, October 24, 2024, Officer Noah Juaire conducted a traffic stop on a 2016 Lexus IS at 370 Hartford Turnpike due to its non-transparent windows and a defective light.

The operator and sole occupant of the vehicle was later identified as Tarrell Berry.

According to police, Tarrell A. Berry, 33, is a resident of 15 Village Way, Apt. 10, Webster, MA.

โ€œThroughout the course of the investigation, Berry was found to be in possession of multiple open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, such as a Corona beer and an open container of tequila,โ€ Officer Juaire said.

Police also noticed a black, crossbody Nike satchel โ€œwhich appeared to have a large bulge inside of itโ€ in the rear right seat of the vehicle.

โ€œWhen asked to step out of the vehicle to further investigate this matter, Berry fled the lawful motor vehicle stop, and led officers on a pursuit,โ€ Officer Juaire said. โ€œSpeeds reached an estimated 75 mph in a 50-mph zone. Throughout the pursuit, Berry failed to maintain his lane, driving into oncoming traffic, and disregarded multiple red traffic lights, endangering the public severely.โ€

According to Officer Juaire, Berry’s vehicle struck another car near the intersection of Hartford Turnpike and the eastbound onramp to the Boston Turnpike, injuring the 55-year-old driver, who was then transported to the hospital.

โ€œFollowing the motor vehicle accident, Berry continued to evade police, attempting to leave the previous scene of the accident where a party was injured,โ€ Officer Juaire said. โ€œBerry was able to operate another 50 to 100 yards before stopping, due to the damage of the vehicle. Berry was subsequently taken into custody.โ€

Officer Juaire continued, โ€œIn the area of XPO Logistics, located at 625 Hartford Turnpike, the black Nike satchel was located. This came after an article search was conducted after officers noticed the bag was no longer in the vehicle at the end of the pursuit. Located inside the black, crossbody Nike satchel, a defaced (all serial numbers scratched off) Taurus G2c 9mm handgun was recovered, with a 12-round mag[azine] (high capacity), carrying 11 9mm rounds inside. Also located in the bag was an empty 12-round magazine, Berry knowingly and willfully possessed these items without a license to carry firearms or ammunition in the Commonwealth.โ€

  8. Stop for Police, Fail
  9. Resist Arrest
  10. Fail to Stop/Yield
  11. Marked Lanes Violation
  12. Speeding in Violation Special Regulation (75 mph in a 50-mph zone)
  13. Alcohol in Motor Vehicle, Possess Open Container of
  14. Equipment Violation, Miscellaneous Motor Vehicle
  15. Window Obstruction/Nontransparent

Berryโ€™s bail was set at $5,000 cash.

He was arraigned in Westborough District Court on Oct. 25, 2024. During his arraignment, the judge approved the Commonwealthโ€™s motion for pretrial detention and Berry was held without bail. Following his arraignment, Berry was transported to the Worcester House of Corrections.

On Oct. 29, 2024, Berry was transported from the Worcester House of Corrections to a dangerousness hearing at Westborough District Court, during which the judge determined that Berry was dangerous.

Berry is being held in jail until January 10, 2025, when he is scheduled to attend a pretrial conference, after which he may be released on $5,000 cash bail.
