A comparative look at Leominster’s election results and the broader Commonwealth trends in the 2024 races

Although the difference is statistically significant at the 95% confidence level according to a two-sample, one-tailed t-test, a majority of Leominster residents, mirroring the broader sentiment across the Commonwealth, backed the Harris & Walz ticket in the November 5, 2024 election. In Leominster, 53.43% of voters chose Harris & Walz, which was 7.8% less than the 61.23% support seen statewide. Conversely, the support for Trump was about 8.16% higher in Leominster โ€” a statistically significant difference at the 95% confidence level โ€” with 44.19% of Leominster voters choosing Trump, compared to just 36.03% of voters throughout the Commonwealth.

The Senate race results reflected a similar trend, with Democrat Elizabeth Warren receiving 52.39% of the Leominster vote, trailing her statewide success of 59.8%, by about 7.41 percentage points. In the 2nd Congressional District, Democrat Jim McGovern secured 64.1% of Leominster’s votes, slightly below his district-wide tally of 68.6%, a difference of 4.5%. These results indicate that although Leominster generally favors Democrats, it tends to be slightly more conservative than the broader state.

In the Governor’s Council District 7, Paul DePalo (Democrat) saw a 53.84% approval in Leominster, closely matching his district-wide performance of 57.3%. The State Senate race in the Worcester and Middlesex District also highlighted this trend, with Democrat John Cronin leading both locally and district-wide. Specifically, 56.49% of Leominster voters and 59.0% of district-wide voters cast their ballots for Cronin. The 2.51% difference, though small, is still statistically significant at the 95% confidence level in a one tailed t-test.

Administrative positions draw strong local support

Voters in Leominster showed overwhelming support for administrative roles such as the Clerk of Courts and Register of Deeds, with Democratic candidates securing near-unanimous backing locally, reflecting strong confidence in these candidates’ abilities to manage county and district responsibilities. Specifically, Dennis McManus, the incumbent Clerk of Courts who ran unopposed, secured 99.27% of the vote in Leominster, closely reflecting the countywide support of 97.9%. Similarly, Democrat Kathleen Reynolds Daigneault, the candidate for Register of Deeds who also ran unopposed, garnered 99.35% of the Leominster vote, which was 1.15% higher โ€” and statistically so at the 95% confidence level using the aforementioned parameters โ€” than her district-wide approval of 98.2%.

Leominster’s voting patterns on ballot questions reflect subtle departures on key social issues, such as unionization, psychedelic substance regulation, and minimum wage for tipped workers

Similarly, other questions on the ballot regarding unionization for transportation network drivers, regulation of natural psychedelic substances, and minimum wage for tipped workers further underscored Leominster’s nuanced stance on social and economic issues. Specifically, 51.80% of Leominster voters supported unionization for transportation network drivers, slightly less than the 54.1% statewide approval. Regarding the regulation of natural psychedelic substances, 42.68% of Leominster voters were in favor, compared to 43.2% statewide, indicating a marginal Leominster reservation. Additionally, the proposal to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers was supported by only 30.20% of Leominster voters, lower than the 35.9% statewide support, highlighting a significant Leominster divergence from broader state sentiment.
