SOMERVILLE — City Councilor-at-Large Jake Wilson has officially announced his intention to run for mayor in the 2025 municipal election, becoming the first candidate to declare a challenge to incumbent Mayor Katjana Ballantyne.
Wilson, currently serving his second term on the City Council and chairing the finance committee since 2022, emphasized his commitment to enhancing transparency and communication within City Hall. Drawing on his extensive background in communications—including 12 years with Major League Baseball and experience as a publisher with a website he created that covers college basketball called Basketball U—he aims to “meet the constituents where they’re at” and improve the city’s outreach efforts.

In an interview with a Boston Globe reporter following his campaign announcement on Monday, Wilson refrained from directly criticizing Mayor Ballantyne but encouraged residents to “read between the lines,” suggesting that those satisfied with the city’s current direction should continue their support, while he offers an alternative vision for Somerville’s future.
Mayor Ballantyne, who has served since 2022 following her tenure as a city councilor, has not yet announced whether she will seek a third term. Her administration has faced challenges, including recent issues at the Somerville Public Library that led to staff resignations and temporary closures due to concerns over disruptive behavior. Despite these hurdles, her tenure has seen initiatives such as the city’s first guaranteed-income pilot program and the appointment of a new police chief to oversee departmental reforms, according to The Boston Globe.
Wilson grew up on a farm in central Iowa before moving to Boston in 1999. Since 2004, he has resided in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood with his wife and two daughters. His community involvement includes serving as president of Somerville Youth Soccer from 2018 to 2021. He also holds a minority ownership stake in the Danish football club Akademisk Boldklub.
As the 2025 election approaches, Wilson’s early declaration sets the stage for a potentially competitive mayoral race, with residents awaiting Mayor Ballantyne’s decision on seeking re-election.
Iowa to Somerville!
