Chelsea man charged with carjacking for ordering woman out of car in Somerville, rummaging through vehicle

SOMERVILLE — On Saturday, June 6, 2026, at approximately 11:05 p.m., Somerville police were alerted to a reported carjacking outside Leone’s Subs & Pizza on Broadway.

(The account and quotations in this article were sourced from a summary of the incident written by Officer Andrew Pasqualino in the Somerville Police Department’s weekly arrest log and do not reflect any political perspective or personal opinion of News Link Live, which is strictly a business entity.)

Officer Andrew Pasqualino said dispatch informed all East units working that the vehicle involved was a 2021 black Toyota Corolla with Massachusetts plates and that a man wearing a hoodie had told the victim to get out of the car.

“I immediately responded to Leone’s, and upon my arrival, I saw a Black Toyota Corolla bearing a MA Reg. [# redacted],” Officer Pasqualino said. “I also saw a male with a hoodie going through that vehicle all car doors, the trunk, and the engine hood were open. I called over to dispatch that I had that vehicle in sight with a male that matched the description going through the car. Dispatch then alerted more units.”

Officer Pasqualino said he then parked directly behind the Toyota while Officers Jorge Morel and Aidian Slattery pulled up in front of it.

Officer Pasqualino said he exited his cruiser at the same time as Officers Morel and Slattery, and as they approached the man going through the Toyota Corolla, they recognized him as Joseph Norman, who was known to the Somerville Police Department from prior incidents.

According to police, Joseph Bobby Norman, 26, resides in Chelsea, Massachusetts.

Officer Morel asked Norman what he was doing, and Norman gave conflicting statements, Officer Pasqualino said.

“Mr. Norman had stated that the car belonged to his sister and that he was checking it for bombs,” Officer Pasqualino said. “I observed that Mr. Norman was holding the keys to a Toyota with a couple of house keys and also observed various miscellaneous items ranging from clothing items, shoes, and cardboard boxes, among other items.”

Police later confirmed that the keys and the items, which were tossed to the side of the road, belonged to the victim, who was the registered owner of the Toyota. Officer Pasqualino added that the items were getting wet because it began to rain during the incident.

“Officer Morel asked for the car keys, at which point Mr. Norman tried to put the car keys in his pant pockets,” Officer Pasqualino said.

The officers repeatedly told Norman to stop reaching into his pockets and stop moving away, but he did not comply.

Officer Pasqualino said Norman began creating distance from officers while still reaching into his pockets and attempting to remove his backpack. Officers then attempted to place Norman in handcuffs.

“At this point, after numerous requests to take his hands out of his pockets and stop moving, officers attempted to place Mr. Norman in handcuffs, however he tensed his body and was pulling away,” Officer Pasqualino said. “Ultimately, he was taken to the ground at which point he placed his left hand under his stomach and refused to put his hand behind his back after numerous orders.”

The officers were eventually able to pull Norman’s arm out from under his stomach and hadcuff him.

Officer Pasqualino said he and Officer Morel then went to Alfredo’s Italian Kitchen at 284 Broadway, which is where the victim ran to after her encounter with Norman.

The victim told officers she was inside her vehicle when Norman approached and asked if the vehicle belonged to her, Officer Pasqualino said. When she said yes, Norman allegedly told her, “Get the f*ck out of the vehicle,” and she gave him the keys.

The victim also told officers she was afraid Norman had a weapon and that Norman had told her the vehicle was his now, Officer Pasqualino said.

“I had asked [the victim] what type of car key she owned, and she stated a Toyota car key,” Officer Pasqualino said. “Officer Morel then showed her the keys that were retrieved from Mr. Norman, and she claimed ownership of them. I’d like to note that as I was speaking to [the victim], she was visibly shaking and was staring off into the distance.”

Cataldo EMS responded to evaluate her, but she refused medical treatment.

Norman was placed under arrest and transported to the Somerville Police Department, where he was booked by Lieutenant Rico Isidoro.

Joseph Bobby Norman, 26, of Chelsea, was charged with the following:
