Russell Brand charged with rape and sexual assault in the UK

LONDON — British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been charged with multiple sexual offenses, including rape, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

According to authorities, Brand, 49, is facing one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. The alleged offenses involve four women and took place between 1999 and 2005 in Bournemouth and Westminster, London.

The investigation began in September 2023 after a joint report by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times brought forward allegations of sexual misconduct. Several women came forward with accounts dating back over a decade, prompting police to examine possible criminal behavior and issue a public call for information.

Brand has denied the allegations, stating that his past relationships were consensual. He has also criticized media coverage of the case. His legal representatives have not released a formal comment since the charges were filed.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the charges on Friday and emphasized the importance of a fair trial. Prosecutors advised the public and press to avoid commentary that could influence the legal process. Brand is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.

Law enforcement officials said the women involved are receiving support from specially trained officers. Police have also encouraged others who may have relevant information to come forward.
