One dead, one seriously injured in Lowell apartment fire

LOWELL — One person died and another was seriously injured in a fire at a multifamily home on Appleton Street, according to a joint statement from Lowell Fire Chief Philip A.J. Charron, Police Chief Greg Hudon, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, and State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine.

Lowell firefighters responded to 144 Appleton Street around 9:10 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2025, after a central station alarm was activated. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the front of the building and found a seriously injured person outside. That individual was transported to the hospital for medical care.

Crews were informed that another occupant remained inside and immediately entered the building to search. Firefighters located the unresponsive individual and attempted lifesaving measures, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will handle formal identification and determine the cause and manner of death.

All other residents of the building escaped safely. The fire was contained to the unit of origin and brought under control within approximately 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lowell Fire and Police Departments, State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, and fire investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s office.
