Fire tears through Clinton commercial building, draws hazmat response

CLINTON — At 12:15 a.m. Monday, the Clinton Emergency Dispatch Center received multiple calls reporting a fire at 32 Greely Street, the location of New England Powder Coating. Initial callers described smoke coming from the building.

Engine 6 and Ladder 1 were first to respond and found active fire venting through the roof of the commercial structure, the Clinton Fire Department reported in a statement. Incident Commander 9C arrived shortly after and struck a second alarm, bringing in mutual aid from surrounding communities. Engine 4 also responded to assist at the scene.

Crews worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control. Due to the nature of the business and potential chemical concerns, the Massachusetts State HAZMAT team was called in to ensure no hazardous runoff entered the sewer system.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Fire Marshal’s Office and the District 8 Fire Investigation Unit.

Mutual aid was provided by the Sterling, Lancaster, West Boylston, Leominster, Bolton, Boylston, and Hudson fire departments.
