GROTON — UMass Memorial Health has announced plans to open a Satellite Emergency Facility (SEF) at 490 Main Street in Groton, restoring emergency care services to the Nashoba Valley region following the 2024 closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center.
A purchase and sale agreement for the property at 490 Main Street in Groton has been executed, according to a recent statement released by UMass Memorial Health. The decision to move forward with this location came after consultation with the Nashoba Valley Health Planning Working Group, local EMS and fire chiefs, and other community stakeholders.

Officials say the SEF will be equipped to provide the same level of emergency care as a traditional hospital emergency department. The facility will also offer imaging, lab services, observation beds, and access to surgical and other emergency consultative services through UMass Memorial Medical Group.
“We are grateful to the Nashoba Valley Health Planning Working Group for their thoughtful recommendations during this time of transition,” UMass Memorial said in a statement. “We are also thankful to the Healey-Driscoll administration for their guidance and support.”
UMass Memorial Health said the SEF is part of wider efforts to improve EMS response times and expand access to health care in the region.
