“I know from previous inquiries on my MDT [mobile data terminal] that the registered owner, Ryan Shepherd [DOB (redacted)], to have a suspended license as of January 25, 2025,โ€ Officer Grady said. โ€œThis was confirmed earlier in the shift as I saw the vehicle parked in front of 24 Water Street. Once I recognized the vehicle in front of me, I activated my emergency blue lights to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The vehicle came to a stop in front of 175 Sterling Street, and I notified dispatch of my location.โ€

According to police, Ryan E. Shepherd, 42, is a resident of Sunrise Avenue, Worcester, MA.

โ€œI approached from the driverโ€™s side and immediately identified the operator as the registered owner,โ€ Officer Grady said. โ€œI confirmed by asking his name and if he is the registered owner, which he replied โ€˜yes.โ€™”

Officer Grady then asked Shepherd for his license.

โ€œAs Mr. Shepherd looked for his documents, I took note that his hands were shaking and he appeared to be very nervous,โ€ Officer Grady noted.

At this time, Officer Michael Frick and Officer Matthew Champagne arrived on scene to assist.

โ€œDispatch then notified officers that there was a separate 9-1-1 call from [a woman] located at [# redacted] Water Street asking for a well-being check on her friend that just left her residence,โ€ Officer Grady said. โ€œMr. Shepherd confirmed that he was thatindividual.โ€

Once dispatch confirmed that Mr. Shepherdโ€™s license was suspended, Officer Grady asked him to exit the vehicle.

โ€œHe was immediately handcuffed (DL) [double locked] and placed in the rear of Officer Champagneโ€™s cruiser. I then read him his Miranda warnings from a card that I carry on my person,โ€ Officer Grady said. โ€œI asked Mr. Shepherd if there was anything we should know about before officers speak to [the woman on Water Street who called 911]. He stated that he was hanging out at her apartment and they got into a verbal argument and she asked him to leave. He stated they are not in a dating relationship, but had been hanging out with her for the last couple weeks.โ€

Shepherd was then transported to the Clinton Police Station for booking.

โ€œOfficer Champagne remained on scene to conduct a motor vehicle inventory per written department policy and await the tow,โ€ Officer Grady said. โ€œWhile conducting his inventory, Officer Champagne found several items, including an unlabeled pill bottle with seven pills of two different types. Three of the pills were orange and circular in shape, labeled โ€˜020,โ€™ the other four were pink and circular in shape, labeled โ€˜022.โ€™ They were located in a backpack that was on the back seat of the vehicle. Mr. Shepherd stated they were muscle relaxing pills that he uses. Officer Champagne also located a black BB gun with an attached red dot that was located underneath the driverโ€™s seat, and a black Buck Knife in a sheath that was located right next to the driverโ€™s seat. In the glove box, Officer Champagne located two separate items used for smoking narcotics. When asked, Mr. Shepherd stated that they did not belong to him. These items were all seized, photographed, logged, and placed into temporary evidence. The pill bottle was placed into the bin for testing. At the completion of his inventory, the vehicle was towed by Guaranty Auto.โ€

Shepherd was charged with the following:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with Suspended License
  • Possession of Class E Substance
