FITCHBURG — A three-alarm fire broke out early Monday morning in a residential building in the city’s downtown area, displacing 12 residents and prompting a large multi-agency response, according to the Fitchburg Fire Department.
In a statement posted to Facebook, the department said Group 1 companies were dispatched just before shift change on May 26, 2025, at approximately 6:08 a.m., following reports of a fire in a “residential building in the downtown area.” First-arriving crews reported heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building and quickly stretched attack line hoses into multiple “divisions of the structure.”
“The fire was successfully extinguished and overhaul operations conducted,” the Fitchburg Fire Department said in its statement.
According to the department, four residents were rescued by ladder, and three animals were also saved during the operation. In total, twelve residents were displaced as a result of the fire.
The incident escalated to a third alarm, drawing assistance from multiple neighboring communities, both at the scene and in covering calls throughout the city.
No injuries or cause of the fire had been reported at the time of publication.
